Unit 4 Discussion Board

For this Discussion Board, please complete the following:

The court system plays an important role in the interpretation of the U.S. Constitution and in reviewing laws passed by the other branches of government. Through its court decisions, the U.S. Supreme Court has expanded the rights and liberties of individuals. Granting rights to one group might conflict with the liberties of another group, so finding a balance is important to a stable and successful democracy.

Explain which civil right or civil liberty matters most to you and why.
What role does the Supreme Court play in protecting that civil right or civil liberty?

Unit 4 Discussion Board

Civil rights refer to guarantees that government officials should treat people equally and at the same time people will be treated equally and decisions will be based on merit rather than gender, race, and other personal characteristics (Krutz & Waskiewicz, 2020). Civil liberties refer to limitations on government power. They intend to protect freedoms that the government might like to intrude on.

The civil right that matters to me most is the right to freedom of religion and speech. The above civil right matters to me because I believe that individuals should have the right to follow a religion of their choice. I also believe that individuals have the freedom to create their religion, and recruit followers. I believe that people should get the opportunity to express themselves freely with no limitations. Everyone has a right to be heard.

The Supreme Court is the highest in the land. Therefore, it is the court that has the last resort for individuals seeking justice.  The Supreme Court has the power of judicial review which makes it possible for it to control and limit the powers of different branches of government. Similarly, the court protects civil rights and liberties by annulling the laws that violate the constitution.

The Supreme Court, therefore, ensures that the changing views of the majority do not in any way undermine the values of the Americans. Therefore, due to the democratic government, the court provides restrictions hindering individuals to pass laws that can harm or have a disadvantage on the minorities.  I, therefore, believe that the Supreme Court cannot allow my values on speech and religion to be undermined.
