In their professional roles, nurses engage in activities that have positive impacts on the health of patients, their families, and the community. The position statements developed by the American Nurses Association (ANA) shape the nursing by allowing nurses to express their views, enabling policy-makers to develop policies that are meant to improve the nursing profession, and by informing patients and families about the importance of the nursing profession in their roles (ANA Center for Ethics and Human Rights, 2015).  The position statement that has been chosen for this discussion is about privacy and confidentiality. This position statement affects nursing practice by ensuring the safe handling of patients’ personal health data, particularly with the advent of technological advancements that continue to shape healthcare delivery today. As the clinical practice setting continues to integrate technologies that involve the electronic transfer of patients’ data such as telehealth and internet-based systems, the facility finds the position statement related to privacy and confidentiality useful as its needs to work with nurses to help protect the confidentiality and privacy of electronic data (ANA Center for Ethics and Human Rights, 2015).

Protecting the privacy and confidentiality of patients’ data ensures the provision of quality health care. In their commitment to healthcare quality and patients’ safety, nurses and clinical practice settings must communicate effectively with health consumers including patients and families. Health consumers can confidently share their health data with their healthcare providers when they are assured of privacy and confidentiality. This trust is required to enhance the creation of strong and meaningful therapeutic relationships with patients and families (ANA Center for Ethics and Human Rights, 2015). As outlined in this position statement, today’s nurses and clinical practice settings should understand their roles in protecting data privacy and confidentiality in order to ensure the integrity of health information and enhance patient safety.
