Synthesis and Recommendation Form
Evidence appraisal helps researchers to synthesize research findings to establish whether they support the proposed evidence-based practice change. The current synthesis process and recommendation follow the Johns Hopkins Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Tool. The evidence-based practice question used in the synthesis states that “For adult obesity patients (P), does the implementation of a staff education on obesity management (I) as compared to lack of staff education (C) improve patient’s enrollment to weight loss program (O) over a period of 6 weeks(T)?” 8 nursing journals support the proposed evidence-based practice change. 4 sources contain Level I evidence (Earnest & Church, 2020; Jaka et al., 2021; Sanchez-Ramirez et al., 2018; Walsh et al., 2019), 3 of them contain Level II evidence (Critchlow et al., 2020; Croghan et al., 2019; Fruh et al., 2019), and 1 contains Level III evidence (Osmundsen et al., 2019). The strength of evidence in Level I and Level II studies is strong and compelling with consistent results. They strongly support the proposed evidence-based practice change. The strength of evidence in the Level III article is good and consistent. Although there is a need to consider a pilot change with respect to this evidence, the investigator can make use of the evidence in the other 7 studies instead.
Based on evidence synthesis and overall quality rating of evidence, the best recommendation is to implement a staff education program on obesity management at the facility. The evidence indicates that there is a strong link between educational interventions and increased staff competency regarding obesity management. The educated nurses will apply the knowledge and skills learned from the program to improve healthcare delivery by educating patients with obesity about behavior change thereby influencing them to enroll in weight loss programs (Sanchez-Ramirez et al., 2018; Fruh et al., 2019; Earnest & Church, 2020; Critchlow et al., 2020; Jaka et al., 2021; Walsh et al., 2019; Croghan et al., 2019). The recommendations are consistent with the organization’s culture, structure, and priorities. They are also feasible in the work environment due to the availability of resources, funding, leadership, and stakeholder support.
