The study aims to identify the effectiveness of alternating pressure air mattresses in preventing pressure ulcers in hospitalized patients. The picot question is: In hospitalized patients with limited mobility (P), how does the use of alternating pressure air mattresses (I) compared to no intervention (C) affect the rates of pressure ulcers (O) within six months (T)?
The two major research designs include qualitative and quantitative research methods. In this study, a quasi-experimental qualitative research design will be used. Here, the study entails attempts to establish the cause-effect relationship between one variable to another (Grand Canyon University, 2021). For instance, whether the use of alternating pressure air mattresses can lead to the reduction of pressure ulcer rates. The participants will be the inpatients who have developed pressure injuries. These participants will not be selected randomly but rather based on pre-existing conditions and certain attributes (Grand Canyon University, 2021). For example, all hospitalized patients who have pressure injuries and those who have not developed but have limited mobility will be eligible. Statistical methods of data analysis such as ANOVA, t-test, percentages, and others will be used.
Qualitative methods are also applicable in this study. A qualitative study design will be supportive of this research study because both interview and observation methods will be applicable. For example, observation will be used to determine the progression of pressure ulcers. Furthermore, interviews will be used to seek the perceptions of both the patients and the caregivers (Grand Canyon University, 2021). Patients may be interviewed to understand their experience after the implementation of the intervention.
