Overcoming Writer’s Block
Writing is an eventuality that most people, especially students hope to avoid. Playwright Paul Rudnick reports that “Writing is 90% procrastination: reading magazines, eating cereal out of the box, watching infomercials. It’s a matter of doing everything you can to avoid writing until it is about four in the morning and you reach the point where you have to write” (Lu, 2020) This condition in which the brain loses the ability and interest to proceed with a write-up is referred to as Writer’s Block (Lu, 2020). Even though it is hard to overcome writer’s block, many ways can work and have worked for many people, including me in overcoming writers’ block.
To overcome Writer’s Block, one should write a schedule and ensure to follow it. A schedule gives a writer a guide and designates time for writing. According to Lu (2020), Robert Boice writes that regular writers produced more work. The time one can allocate depends on individual preferences and potential. Silvia recommends four hours for a substantial amount of work (Lu, 2020). People should pick hours when they are most alert and ensure to avoid all forms of interruptions during this time.
Additionally, one needs to adequately prepare for the writing process. Popularly, psychologies categorize the writing process into four stages, namely, preparation, incubation, illumination, and verification (Lachs, 2018). Preparation can be done by doing adequate research on the topic in question. This process will provide the writer with a strong outline of the write-up which in turn enables a proper organization of thoughts. With a proper understanding and imagination of the best ways to handle the piece, one can get the necessary motivation to sit down and put down what is in the brain.
Many of these suggestions have worked for me. I particularly adhere to self-discipline to ensure that I overcome writer’s block and finish up my assignments. Self-disciple enables one to abide by what is recommended and follow schedules. People have a long list of priorities and sources of disruption. Discipline ensures that one is not lured by these interruptions and stray from priorities because of preference (Lachs, 2018). Priorities should be made out of necessity and importance. As such, if my assignment is necessary and important, disciple ensures that I prioritize it no matter what.
Additionally, I have figured out my sweet spot in terms of time, place, and condition. I work best during the daytime in a quiet but serious place. As such, to do my assignment, I go to a quiet place like a library or sit in my house with doors closed, as well as radios, TV, and other music sources. I ensure to avoid procrastination and condition my brain to concentrate when it’s time to write a piece. Abiding by this has enabled me to ensure that I catch up with my assignments.
Writer’s block is a real hindrance for anybody who wishes to write any piece. These hindrances stem from many sources, particularly disinterestedness and interruptions. Fortunately, there are so many ways one can address these hindrances and overcome writers’ block. People should be aware of the available recommendations and adopt what works for them while writing a piece. Furthermore, one should be aware of the various impediments they encounter while writing and ensure to avoid them as much as possible.
