Obesity in Adults Focusing on CURE or Management

A research article by Fruh (2017) tackles Obesity in adults, its complications, risk factors, and the strategies used for long-term management of Obesity. In this article, a narrative review was used to search for literature sources on PubMed dated May 2016. The standard search parameters applied in this search were diabetes, intervention, cardiovascular, Obesity, weight loss, comorbidity, and management. A total of three articles were reviewed. In all these articles, the review focused on the prevalence of Obesity in the United States, the comorbidity and mortality rates of the disease, and its management. The study yielded tremendous findings concerning the condition.

Obesity is now considered among the top contributors to the increased mortality cases in the United States. The World Health Organization reports that Obesity and being overweight are global problems in most developing and developed countries (Fruh, 2017). In 2015, for instance, all states in the United States recorded an obesity prevalence of above 20%. It is estimated that approximately 37% of adult women and 35% of adult men have Obesity in the United States (Fruh, 2017). Childhood obesity has led to the increased onset of early comorbidities with diverse health impacts on children.

Another important finding from the literature review was that modest weight loss is a long-term maintenance strategy that helps with obesity management. According to the World Health Organization, weight loss of between 5%-10% on individuals suffering from overweight and Obesity helps improve the health outcomes of most Obesity-related comorbidities such as stress incontinence, hypertension, PCOS, hyperglycemia, and T2D prevention. From a meta-analysis of 15 studies, it was discovered that the weight loss benefits further reflected the general reduction of mortality rates. Weight loss was also crucial in reducing the rates of CVD mortalities by up to 41% (Pearce et al., 2019).

Individuals can apply several strategies to help with weight loss which is a crucial step and most preferred mode of obesity management. Having structured lifestyle support helps a lot with weight management. Almost 34% of all participants that were obtaining structured lifestyle support through the help of a trained nurse managed to achieve a weight loss that was equal to or greater than 5% as compared to 19% of the other participants who were using the usual care to attain weight loss (George et al., 2018). Some of the common lifestyle factors that help achieve and maintain weight loss include modified food intake, which accounts for 98%, and increased physical activity, which accounts for 94%. Some other lifestyle factors include exercising an average of one hour daily, eating breakfast daily, weighing yourself weekly, watching television for less than ten hours weekly, and using a weight loss program.

Having realistic weight loss targets also helps a lot with obesity management. Most individuals are generally fond of setting unrealistic weight-loss goals due to misinformation they receive from their friends, media, and healthcare professionals (George et al., 2018). Having a food diary was an evidence-based nutritional intervention that helps with weight loss by the American Nurse Practitioners Foundation. Regular and consistent food diary recordings are significantly tied to long-term weight loss success. Most patients who have successfully achieved weight loss have given credit to various behavioral factors that help maintain weight loss, such as having a robust social support network, doing away with disinhibited eating and binge eating, having self-efficacy and internal motivation, and being accountable for your personal decisions.
