Issues That Persist in Todays Workforce Culture
Introduction
People spend almost one-third of their adult lives at work and workplace issues are common sources of anxiety and stress. Workplace issues also lead to reduced performance and productivity. Workforce issues such as staff shortages and excessive workload may lead to negative impacts on both the individual and the business (Yadav et al., 2021). On the other hand, issues such as retaining workers and maintaining diversity at the workplace may lead to some positive effects on the organization and the individual employees. Some of these issues have existed since time immemorial and persist (Yadav et al., 2021). This paper discusses why some of the issues persist in today’s workforce culture.
Lesser education at the workplace has always been identified as a factor for poor quality healthcare services in hospitals and clinics. This issue has persisted over time due to a lack of training and continuing education (Mason et al., 2020). The high costs associated with training staff and continuing education has fostered lesser education among the medical staff. Healthcare is dynamic, hence, proper education, training, and refresher courses should be encouraged. Fewer job opportunities are another issues that have persisted over time in workforce culture. Low levels of education, lack of training, and lack of continuing education have led to fewer job opportunities for individuals (Mason et al., 2020). Additionally, fewer workplaces may contribute to a lack of job opportunities among people.
Increasing diversity is an issue that has persisted in workforce culture. There has been a persistent increase in workforce diversity because of the policies and anti-discriminatory laws in workplaces. The US government, for instance, enacted the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which addresses issues of discrimination based on ethnicity, color, religion, and sex (Yadav et al., 2021). Other policies such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination based on one’s disability. Retaining Workers is a problem in most healthcare facilities. This issue is influenced by poor salaries and wages and poor working conditions. People look for jobs to achieve their financial goals, so, they need good pay (Yadav et al., 2021). Similarly, organizations must improve workplaces to retain employees.
The lack of effective faculties for higher education is a serious issue in universities. One of their biggest obstacles is the conditions faculty work under. Because those conditions can easily preclude them from being truly effective (Mason et al., 2020). For instance, they are not allocated enough money. Also, they lack the independence to do their work due to a lot of disruptions from the higher offices. The salary difference between corporate and academic jobs is a serious issue. Corporate or industries pay more than academia. This is because corporates are more focused on making profits compared to universities (Yadav et al., 2021). Also, the government and university management do not take their employees as seriously as corporates do.
Other things that have persisted in workforce culture are excessive workload and staff shortages. The two issues go hand in hand in workplaces. For instance, staff shortages often result in excessive workload in workplaces (Mason et al., 2020). Staff shortages are caused by employee turnover, lack of proper payments, or bad workplace environments. Financial issues may also lead to staff shortages when the organization cannot afford more workers. As a result, a few available workers tend to experience excessive workloads as they try to achieve daily goals.
Conclusion
Workforce issues such as staff shortages and excessive workload may lead to negative impacts on both the individual and the business. Some of the workforce issues have persisted over time. Some of the issues include lesser education, fewer job opportunities, increasing diversity, and others. This paper has discussed some of the reasons why these issues have persisted in the current workforce culture.
