Counselors play a critical role in helping parents who may be unsure of how to discuss sexuality with their children. As a counselor, I would talk to parents to discover the source of anxiety about having sexual discussions with their children. After discovering the source of anxiety, I would help the parents work on how to get rid of it. For example, some parents may be uncomfortable discussing sexuality because they fear that their children would not be open to having an honest conversation. In such a scenario, I would help the parent improve their ability to communicate with their children. I would inform parents that children who are comfortable enough to talk about sexuality with their parents are less likely to have sex as teenagers. When young people lack information about sexuality, they are at a higher risk of engaging in unsafe sex, getting pregnant or even contracting sexually transmitted infections

  1. People face a variety of sources of pressure to get married. Which arguments for getting married or remaining single make sense to you? Why?

Many people experience pressure to get married as they get older. To me, many arguments for remaining single make sense. Many people have a strong desire for romantic relationships or marriage but neither of the two is a requirement for fulfillment or happiness. When people remain single, they develop a strong sense of self hence they have a better understanding of their identity. A deep understanding of oneself can help avoid issues such as co-dependency when people finally choose to get married. Additionally, when people are single, they have more time to develop fulfilling platonic relationships with other people. Single people, especially those who are still young, have a better opportunity of advancing their careers without any form of distractions and only enter into committed relationships when they have met their life goals. Remaining single also means that there is more time to focus on improving physical and mental health.
