1. Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is a disorder in which a person may have trouble paying attention, controlling behaviors, or may be overly active.

2. It is common for ADHD to run in families which leads researchers to believe that there is a genetic component to this disorder. It was found that 74% inherited ADHD susceptibility genes from family (Faraone and Larsson, 2018). ADHD is a complex in the way that it is not related to a single gene (NHS.uk). It is also found that those with ADHD have an imbalance in the neurotransmitters of the brain (NHS.uk).

3. It is believed that ADHD may have environmental factors that contribute to developing this disorder. Children exposed to neurotoxic chemicals like lead and pesticides have a higher instance of inattention and hyperactivity (Legg, 2018). There is also a strong connection with prenatal exposure to cigarette smoke, alcohol, and drugs and development of ADHD. (Legg, 2018)

4. Medication management and behavioral therapy are the biggest protective factors in combating the negative implications of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. With medication, including stimulants, it allows the brain to slow down and focus on a task. Behavioral therapy targets the negative behavior and finds positive replacements for those actions and coping mechanisms.

5. Risk factors for those with ADHD includes trouble with authority, behavioral or mood disorders, and violence (cdc.gov). Those with ADHD are also at a higher risk of injury; this includes falls, car accident, and concussion (cdc.gov)

WEEK 5 ASSIGNMENT

Choose one of the following topics: Describe your chosen topic. How is genetics involved in your chosen topic? Is there a clear genetic link with your topic? If so, what genes are involved in the likelihood of this condition? If not, how might genetics impact your chosen topic?

Topic: Breast Cancer

Genetics Involvement: Breast cancer has a clear genetic factor. Mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are well-established genetic risk factors for breast cancer. These genes are involved in repairing damaged DNA and maintaining genomic stability. Mutations in these genes can increase the chances of developing breast and ovarian cancers.  (Breast cancer risk in American women)

Relate how at least two environmental factors can impact your chosen topic.

Environmental Factors: (Breast cancer risk factors and prevention methods)

Lifestyle and Diet: High-fat diets and sedentary lifestyles have been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. Conversely, a healthy diet and regular physical activity may reduce the risk.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): Long-term use of hormone replacement therapy in postmenopausal women has been connected to an increased risk of breast cancer. Avoiding unnecessary HRT can be a protective measure.

Explain a minimum of two protective factors associated with your chosen topic.

Protective Factors: (Breast cancer risk factors and prevention methods)

Early Detection and Screening: Regular mammograms and early detection through self-exams can significantly improve outcomes.

Healthy Lifestyle: Maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and limiting alcohol intake can contribute to reducing the risk of breast cancer.

Explain a minimum of two risk factors associated with your chosen topic.

Risk Factors:

Genetic Mutations (BRCA1/BRCA2): Individuals with mutations in these genes have a higher risk.  (Breast cancer risk factors and prevention methods)

Family History: Having close relatives with a history of breast cancer increases an individual’s risk. My grandmother died of breast cancer at a young age, which means I have breast cancer as a genetic and have to perform a mammogram and check if I have the genetic mutation (BRCA1/BRCA2).
