Bennett, B., Sharma, M., Bennett, R., Mawson, A., Buxbaum, S., & Sung, J. (2018). Using Social Cognitive Theory to Predict Medication Compliance Behavior in Patients with Depression in Southern United States in 2016 in a Cross-Sectional Study. Journal Of Caring Sciences7(1), 1-8. https://doi.org/10.15171/jcs.2018.001

The purpose of the study was to determine how the social cognitive theory can be used to predict medication compliance among patients diagnosed with depression. Depression is a significant healthcare issue that affects more than 14 million people in the U.S. and medication adherence is linked to positive outcomes. The researchers used a cross-sectional design to assess how self-efficacy, self-control, and the environment impact medication adherence. The findings illustrated that the social and physical environment impacts medication adherence. However, the authors concluded that the social cognitive theory does not effectively predict medication compliance among patients with depression and that it should be used alongside other theories such as the multi-theory model of health behavior change.

The article relates to the social cognitive model since it uses the components of the model to assess medication adherence. The model is based on the idea that environmental factors, personal experiences, and other people’s actions influence health behaviors. The article focused on medication adherence which is an example of health behavior

The article can be relevant to future NP practice when assessing factors that influence medication adherence among patients with mental illnesses. NPs must consider how the social and physical environment impacts their patients’ attitudes about medication.

Broekema, S., Luttik, M., Steggerda, G., Paans, W., & Roodbol, P. (2018). Measuring Change in Nurses’ Perceptions About Family Nursing Competency Following a 6-Day Educational Intervention. Journal Of Family Nursing24(4), 508-537. https://doi.org/10.1177/1074840718812145

The study assessed nurses’ perspectives regarding family nursing systems after taking part in an educational intervention that was based on the Calgary family assessment and intervention models. The main aim of the education intervention was to improve the nurses’ perspectives about the significance of family in nursing care and enhance knowledge and skills for working effectively with families. After the implementation of the intervention, the participants reported experiencing enhanced awareness of the significance of family involvement in nursing care thus illustrating that the education intervention was successful.

The article directly relates to the family assessment and intervention model since this model was used to develop a comprehensive education plan for nurses. The education plan included how to engage effectively with families including conducting thorough assessments using Eco maps and genograms, developing nursing diagnoses, and intervening with both individuals and family members.

The article is relevant to future NP practice since it provides a guideline for working effectively with families. NPs work in numerous health settings and almost always work with families when diagnosing and managing chronic and complex illnesses. Therefore, they must know how to assess families to determine their needs and collaborate with them during the intervention process.

Looman, W. (2019). Teaching Systems Thinking for Advanced Family Nursing Practice: A Theory-Based Tool. Journal Of Family Nursing26(1), 5-14. https://doi.org/10.1177/1074840719891439

The article identified the importance of systems thinking among advanced family nurse practitioners. Nurses must understand that multiple interdependent systems impact their patients’ health instead of focusing on understanding their patients as individual people. The family is a system comprising of family member subsystems that interact with each other and impact each other. Positive change within the family system results in positive change for the patient. Using the systems thinking model, the article described an assessment and intervention tool that includes patient health concerns, family subsystems, family processes, and nursing actions provided at individual, interpersonal family, and family system levels. The tool was implemented to enhance family practice skills among students taking a nursing course and it proved to be useful in supporting systems thinking among the students.

The article directly relates to the family systems theory since it describes how nurses can incorporate systems thinking when working with families. The article describes the importance of assessing families as systems and providing interventions that support change in family processes and systems which in turn, promote positive health outcomes. The article can be relevant to future NP practice since it provides a comprehensive description of systems thinking when engaging with families. NPs must consider how family processes such as relationships among members affect health as they work with both individuals and families.

Sleet, D., & Dellinger, A. (2020). Using behavioral science theory to enhance public health nursing. Public Health Nursing37(6), 895-899. https://doi.org/10.1111/phn.12795

The article described how the theory of behavioral science can be applied in nursing. Behavioral science theories facilitate a better understanding of patient behavior and can be applied when researching the determinants of health behavior. The article also provided an example of how the transtheoretical model can be applied to fall prevention, a major issue that affects older adults in inpatient settings and at home. The model can be used during the assessment of fall risks and when developing nursing interventions for fall prevention.

The article relates to the transtheoretical model since it describes how the model can be used to tailor fall-prevention strategies for the elderly after assessing their readiness for change. The article identifies that patients may be at different stages of change and that it is important to consider these stages to develop patient-centered interventions.

The article could be relevant in future NP practice since it describes how the transtheoretical model can be used to provide patient-centered care. NPs encounter patients who are at different stages of readiness for change hence the interventions they provide must reflect patient-specific stages.

Yehualashet, S., Asefa, K., Mekonnen, A., Gemeda, B., Shiferaw, W., & Aynalem, Y. et al. (2021). Predictors of adherence to COVID-19 prevention measure among communities in North Shoa Zone, Ethiopia based on health belief model: A cross-sectional study. PLOS ONE16(1), e0246006. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0246006

The article used the health belief model to assess the factors influencing adherence to COVID-19 prevention strategies for people living in northern Ethiopia. The researchers used a cross-sectional study design where data was mainly collected using questionnaires. The findings illustrated that many of the members of the community did not adhere to the safety measures because they believed that they were not susceptible to the illness. Additionally, the communities had a high social bond which prevented the implementation of preventive measures such as social distancing.

The article relates to the health belief model because it analyzed how people’s perceptions about the threat of COVID-19 impacted their ability to implement preventive measures. The article could be relevant to future NP practice when assessing factors that impact health behavior. Since NPs work with patients from diverse backgrounds, they should consider an individual as well as environmental factors that impact health behavior.
