Discussion 8-1: Effective Communication Strategies
Emergency room nurses might find it challenging to effectively address the concerns of patients undergoing treatment. Through effective communication, these nurses can properly manage crucial conversations with patients and their families (Siropaides et al., 2020). The purpose of this discussion is to describe effective communications to manage crucial conversations, especially when working with patients and diverse numerous com teams.
Leaders and nurses need to employ numerous communication strategies to effectively manage crucial conversations. These effective communication strategies include being an active listener, paying attention to the audience’s needs, using body language appropriately, and using culturally appropriate as well as simple language to convey ideas (Chichirez & Purcărea, 2018). As Siropaides et al. (2020) explain, managing crucial conversations with patients requires that healthcare professionals adequately discuss patients’ risks and disease symptoms. Through effective communication, healthcare professionals can adequately address goals of care and guide the development of treatment plans.
Effective communication plays an important role in the management of diverse work teams such as those comprising of different gender, culture, and generations. Precisely, when managing diverse teams, effective communication helps leaders to clarify goals, structure responsibilities, delegate tasks, and provide feedback (Chichirez & Purcărea, 2018). In my professional life as an emergency room nurse, I have come across several leaders who utilized effective communication strategies to manage diverse work teams. For example, I had a manager who was the definition of a team leader, a cheerleader, an encourager, and a person who demonstrated hard work. The leader utilized effective communication strategies to manage emergency room nurses of different gender, culture, and generations. He led by example 100% of the time and always offered to help when one’s patient load became too heavy. He was amazing. Ideally, effective communication is indeed a fundamental skill that healthcare professionals and leaders need to embrace.
