College Entrance Essay
One motivating thing that comes to my mind when I think about NYU is an environment where every person is respected and valued. Before joining NYU, I never thought that I would one day be given an opportunity to deliver a public speech to a group that comprises people from different cultural backgrounds. Members of my ethnic community are often viewed as an inferior group that does not deserve to be heard. Since I joined NYU, I have gained the confidence to make a public speech, using the opportunity to teach teams and work with them to advance advocacy initiatives. Currently, I lead small groups that work to bring together new students who are struggling to transition to a higher learning environment.
I aspire to utilize my new identity in places of work to help existing employees to create a safe environment for new hires who are joining an organization for the first time, especially those who have not been employed before. Working with diverse teams, always striving to understand their concerns in a new environment, encourages me to build the courage to help people to face obstacles. I also utilize the opportunity to help them to develop the grit to forge ahead.
Leading teams, irrespective of my ethnic background, is among the motivating factors that drive my personal and professional growth today. The experiences that I have encountered at NYU drive me into envisioning myself as a leader who can empower minority groups to reach great heights that they never thought they could one day reach. NYU has created an environment where every learner feels valued and respected irrespective of his or her year of study and background. Working with every learner each day to understand the concerns that they might want the university to address can strengthen the institution’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
