School counselors help students make learning a positive experience. High school is a very important stage of the study. It is where students make their minds regarding various career paths they would wish to take (Galassi, 2017). Therefore, proper career counseling is essential at this stage. As a high school, the first thing to do is to develop a therapeutic relationship with the students to improve the effectiveness of such counseling sessions (Galassi, 2017). A good therapeutic relationship will enhance understanding between the two entities.
Also, it would be important for the counselor to set specific goals with the students during career counseling. Defining specific goals is important because they keep students on track in academic and co-curricular activities (Galassi, 2017). Goals also keep the conversation on track during the counseling sessions. For instance, the counselor may ask the students to state their perfect job, where they want to be in the next 10 years, and others.
Career counselor provides information resources to students. Students who have not yet made up their minds regarding what they want to do in the future may be provided with a guide (Galassi, 2017). Also, those with multiple options can receive career resources showing what every person needs to do to achieve certain careers. Further, as a high school career counselor, it is necessary to discuss career development and administer and interpret aptitude and ability assessments. The important job of a career counselor is to guide students so that they do not make wrong choices (Galassi, 2017). The objectives and careers they chose to follow must resonate with their ability, which is the importance of aptitude and ability assessment.
