Search Strategy

locate three peer-reviewed primary research articles that pertain to your practice area and are of particular interest to you: Mental Health
Write a 6-paragraph APA-formatted paper in which you do the following:

Write a 1-pararaph introduction of how you conducted your literature search and the databases consulted in your search in relation to your practice area or area of interest. Be specific and provide examples.
Write a 1-paragraph summary of each of the articles you have selected (a total of 3 paragraphs).
Write 1 paragraph that synthesizes the three articles using a scholarly voice.
Write a final paragraph in which you discuss the differences between summarizing and synthesizing research. Be specific and provide examples.

Search Strategy
The three selected articles are related to mental health, which is the practice area of interest. More specifically, the articles are about the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in addressing mental health issues (Conaughton et al., 2017). The two major keywords used to search for these articles include effectiveness and cognitive behavioral therapy. These keywords were searched from different databases such as semantic scholar, Google Scholar, and PubMed Central. These reliable and valid databases provide quality research articles.
Summary of the Articles
Wang et al. (2022) acknowledge the fact that children and younger people often experience specific phobias that affect their daily life. The study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the one-session treatment (OST) compared to multisession cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in children and young people (CYP) with particular phobias (Wang et al., 2022). The sample included CYP from age 16 years who have specific phobias. Recruitment happened nationally through Health and social pathways to the intervention (OST) and controlled group (CBT). Researchers calculated the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER). The study result showed that the OST group incurred less cost compared to the CBT group. However, both maintained similar improvements in quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) (Wang et al., 2022). The study concluded that OST, compared to CBT, reduced the cost of care and maintained similar QALYs.
The second article is by Conaughton et al. (2017) that conducted a study whose aim was to evaluate the efficacy of an unmodified, online CBT program for anxiety disorders (BRAVE-ONLINE) in High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder (HFASD) children (Conaughton et al., 2017). The sample was 42 HFASD children between ages 8 and 12 years, suffering from anxiety disorders and their parents. They were divided into intervention and controlled groups randomly. The researchers used diagnostic interviews and parent/child questionnaires completed at pre and post-treatment and 3-month follow-up. Results showed that the intervention group had a significant reduction in anxiety numbers of anxiety diagnoses and related problems (Conaughton et al., 2017). They gained overall functioning after the intervention.
The third article is by Sedighrad et al. (2021) who carried out a study whose aim was to investigate the effectiveness of CBT on reducing impulsive behaviors (IBs), despair, and alexithymia in depressive patients. The sample included all patients diagnosed with depression. A convenient sampling method was used to select the sample. Instruments used include the Barratt impulsiveness scale (BIS), the Toronto Alexithymia scale (TAS-20), and the Miller Hope scale (MHS) (Sedighrad et al., 2021). The results showed that CBT improved IBs alexithymia, and despair in the intervention group of depressed patients more significantly than in the control group.
Articles Synthesis
All these articles presented research studies about how CBT can be effective in addressing various mental health disorders. Conaughton et al. (2017) stated that CBT is effective in addressing anxiety symptoms in HFSAD children. In terms of the efficacy of CBT in addressing mental health issues, the results of Conaughton et al. (2017) are consistent with those presented by Sedighrad et al. (2021) which showed that CBT was effective in reducing depressive symptoms. Although Conaughton et al. (2017) and Sedighrad et al. (2021) proved the efficacy of CBT in preventing mental health symptoms, Wang et al. (2022) showed that OST is more cost-effective than CBT. Therefore, in terms of cost, OST would be more recommended than CBT. Overall, CBT is a good psychotherapy approach that is capable of addressing symptoms related to various mental health disorders.
Differences between Research Summary and Synthesis
A research summary is an overview of important general information in own words based on the article or subject area. A summary is just an objective overview of what is entailed in a single research article (Walden University, 2022). On the other hand, research synthesis involves combining ideas from multiple research studies to make a new interpretation. In synthesis, the writer reads several sources of evidence and then creates new ideas based on what they have read (UAGC, 2022). Therefore, for synthesis, a paragraph will consist of multiple sources and citations.
